Artist Statement

My work is primarily two-dimensional, employing a variety of wet and dry media, including; acrylic, stylefile brush markers, pen and oil paint. My colour palette tends to be bright, however, I often contrast light against dark. I enjoy using bold lines, patterns and visual textures. My work is mostly figurative and tends to lean toward the surreal. I draw influence from artists including; Dorothea Tanning, Frida Kahlo, Mario Dubsky, El Greco and Paul Gauguin. I enjoy blurring the boundaries between real and imagined worlds and my subjects are often surrounded by stylised motifs that are repeated across multiple paintings. My work is concerned with topics related to childhood, spirituality and gender. I am heavily influenced by my academic training as a sociologist, often using my visual art practice to make sense of and stimulate discussion about sociological issues and concepts.
