Research Statement
As a sociologist I have worked primarily on research related to illicit recreational drug use, drug education and prevention, and gender (specifically masculinities); I have published a number of peer reviewed papers in international journals exploring these topics. However, I am also interested in the visual arts, community arts and rural sociology. I am currently working on a research project that is sociologically investigating crimes committed in three small rural villages in Ireland during the period 1941-1953. You can find full details of my publications at the bottom of this page.
Here are the Drug Takers:
Men, Masculinities and Illicit Recreational Drug Use.
My PhD sociologically explored Irish men’s views on, and experiences of, illicit recreational drug use; examining how men use illicit drugs as symbolic social objects to communicate messages about their masculine identity. My research on men's illicit drug use provided new explanations for men's propensity to use illicit drugs; revealing some men use drugs for reasons that relate to their expectations about how men ought to be and act in contemporary society. During the analysis of the PhD research data, I made a series of artworks as both an analytic means of thinking about the data and as a reflexive process. These artworks (paintings and drawings) have been used to communicate some of the findings from the research and to engage audiences in discussions on the topic. Click on the images below to enlarge.
